Dental Bridgework

All of your teeth play an important role in speaking, chewing, and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth.

Tooth loss does not necessarily have to occur as you age. But if you do lose teeth, they must be replaced to maintain proper function of your mouth. Fortunately, there are options for correcting tooth loss.

Dental Bridge Options

A bridge — a device used to replace missing teeth — attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges) or they can be removable (removable bridge).

Fixed bridges are applied by either placing crowns on the abutment teeth or by bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth. Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments.

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be aware of their importance to your appearance and dental health. Your teeth work together for many daily functions from eating to speaking. With missing teeth, it is difficult to do these things. Missing teeth can and should be replaced. Fixed bridges are a great way to restore your dental health and appearance.

Bridge or Fixed Partial Denture | Why a Bridge is Needed | How a Bridge Is Attached | Materials Used for Bridges | Dental Bridges Care

What exactly is a bridge or fixed partial denture?

A bridge (fixed partial denture) is a device that fills the gap where teeth are absent. Fixed bridges are bonded into place and can only be removed by a dental professional. Removable bridges, as the name implies, can be taken out and cleaned. Fixed bridges offer more stability than their removable counterparts.

Why do I need a bridge?

Oral functionality and appearance are important reasons for wearing a bridge. A bridge helps support your lips and cheeks. The loss of a back tooth may cause your mouth to sink and your face to look older.

Dental health is the most important reason for a bridge. Teeth were designed to complement each other. Unusual stresses are placed on the gums and other oral tissues when teeth are missing, causing a number of potentially harmful disorders.

Increased risk of gum disease has proven to be one of the worst side effects of missing teeth and can be minimized with a bridge.

Missing teeth can cause speech disorders because they are used to make many of the sounds we use to speak clearly.

How is a bridge attached?

The attachment procedure usually takes two or three appointments to complete. At the first appointment, Dr. Squier will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin.

Because the bridge must be fabricated very precisely to ensure correct bite and to match the opposing tooth, impressions of the teeth are taken and sent to a lab where the bridge will be constructed.

Fixed bridges are typically cemented to the natural teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. A pontic (false tooth) replaces the lost tooth. Crowns, which are cemented onto the natural teeth, provide support for the bridge.

What materials are used?

Bridges can be constructed from gold alloys, non-precious alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Porcelain is often bonded to either a precious or non-precious metal.

How do I take care of my bridge?

A strict regimen of brushing and flossing will keep the bridge and surrounding teeth clean. This is of critical importance as the bridge relies on the neighboring teeth for support.

Dr. Rachel Squier is one of the best dental practicioners I have ever been seen by when dental work has been needed. It's been several years now since she designed, built, and installed a permanent bridge in my mouth and I have not had any single issues at all. Patient Review by Judy S

I am a senior citizen with life-long dental phobias, and Dr. Squier eased my fears from the first appointment through the several visits her diagnosis and treatment required that resulted in my beautiful new smile. She and her assistants (Amanda and Sarah) always explained things understandably and made me comfortable during the more difficult procedures. Lidia in the front office couldn't have been more accommodating in arranging my appointments and payments while always greeting me with a big smile that helped keep me calm. Dr. Squier is a perfectionist, while calmly singing along with the music and chatting with her assistant. I highly recommend them.

Patient Review by Scott F

Detailed ... extremely detailed! But I am getting ahead of myself. The courtesy extended from initial contact to visit was very, very welcoming. Persistence in retrieving my already approved requested files from the dental office that referred me was a hurdle, but professionally that too was powered through. The cleanliness, bright appearance, COVID CDC compliance implementation, and security measures in place were quite comforting. Another level of comfort, they were NOT overbooked! They as a team, are well organized, scheduling according to individual needs versus people mulling around awaiting their turn to see the doctor. When I went in - I had questions, when I departed, I had answers to include what to expect next visit and the time and date of that visit. Euphoria! In closing … I am COMPLETELY impressed with the team I was fortunate enough to have met during my time there! Doctor Squier is what a Prosthodontist should be and more. I found her to be a detail-orientated irreproachable professional with a comforting and pleasant disposition. Thank you, Doctor Squier, Amanda, Lidia, and Lorraine for welcoming me in as a new patient, but never making me feel like I was one.

Patient Review by Richard M

I had put off having some broken teeth from a previous injury repaired or replaced for around 25 years. I was apprehensive, to say the least, about what the procedure would entail, the seriousness of it, and of course the cost. After meeting Dr. Rachel Squier the first time, most of my anxiety was relieved. Ultimately I decided to move forward with the procedure of removing 3 teeth, preparing two teeth to receive crowns which would support a new bridge. The procedure would require the bone structure and the gums to be remodeled, and this would require a second doctor, another member of her team, Dr. Deture for this work. Dr. Squier was always eager and polite to answer all of my questions, and explain everything that would happen, and again as it was happening. The assistants in her office would also do the same. The assistants are very capable of handling many of the office visits, and actually stayed late after closing one day to readhere a temporary bridge once. It's been 8 months now since the first visit, and 4 months since the final visit. The new bridge and all the work performed by Dr. Squier are perfect. I was never pressured to do one thing or another, and I always was informed about what to expect. Dr. Squier spends more time talking to her patients, explaining the procedures, than most doctors I've visited. She definitely knows her specialty and much more, and is very adept at using her talents to make people's smiles and lives better. Thank You Dr. Squier and to everyone of the fine ladies in your office. I would advise anyone who is in need of the very best prosthodontist in this part of the world to go visit with Dr. Rachel Squier.

Patient Review by Linda C

Dr. Squire is the most talented, professional and caring prosthodontist in the state of Florida! I came to her needing a replacement fixed bridge & partial plate . My case was extremely challenging, as a result of a prior car accident which left me only five upper teeth and very little supporting bone. Thank's to Dr. Squire's unparalleled expertise and patience, I now have the smile I didn't think I'd ever have again!
