How long does it take to fit a dental crown?
Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown of either plastic or metal.
On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown and then fit and adjust the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place and you have a new beautiful looking tooth.

What are the capabilities of crowns?
Crown and bridgework are very reliable solutions for major dental problems caused by accidents, diseases, or wear and tear. Major problems can usually be corrected using these techniques. Materials used in these repairs are either high-grade porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold. A higher strength of the porcelain and gold materials is recommended to treat the most serious dental problems. In instances where damage has occurred resulting in the loss of teeth, where teeth have broken away through excessive wear, or tooth damage caused by old fillings breaking down, crowns and/or bridges can be used as a long-term solution.
Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth that is are usually due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function. In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause appearance problems due to staining or chipping. Porcelain crowns and bridges are suitable in cases where porcelain veneers are not. In teeth with root canal fillings, crowns can prevent breakage.

I am a "big time dental escapee," so if I land in a particular office and come back more than once, that means there's a lot that's right with it. I like a well-oiled machine, or I'm one foot out the door. (If only I held myself to such a high standard, darn it) Anyway, Dr. Squier is solid as a rock. I had complete confidence in everything she did and found her to be downright masterful with that back molar! I have difficult teeth to diagnosis. I say this because numerous dentists over the years have not been able to diagnose what has been wrong with my teeth. In fact, on two different occasions in the past, I suffered for years while dentists tried numerous procedures unsuccessfully. In their defense, these problems occurred between two rear molars and could not be seen on X-ray. My experience with Dr. Squier has been completely different. When I explained my symptoms and my past experiences to her about two years ago, she figured out what was wrong despite nothing showing up on X-ray and a crown solved the problem immediately. When a similar problem happened on the opposite side this October, we discussed whether to be aggressive and proceed with another crown or whether to try something more conservative first. With my blessing, she took the more aggressive approach and did a crown. Because I was going on an extended vacation immediately after the crown was complete, Dr. Squier put in temporary glue both to be sure I would enjoy my vacation and to be sure the crown solved the problem. When I returned from vacation, I still had symptoms near the new crown but I felt it was from the tooth in front of it. Rather than proceed with a new crown immediately which was my initial preference, she requested a consult with an Endodontist to be certain I did not need a root canal and that the second tooth was also involved. After confirming that I did not need a root canal and the second tooth was cracked, we both felt better proceeding with a second crown. At this point in time, the temporary crown is in place and I am confident that the problem will be solved.
