What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.

Dental Implants Presentation

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant.

Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.  A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

A smiling elderly man

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”

For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.

Do you have one or more missing teeth?

Take the next step, eat the foods you love, and smile with confidence!

Surgical Advances

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Drs. Squier or Goebel is able to place single-stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction — further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Drs. Squier or Goebel performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary. The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

Patient Review by William

Having been to many dentists over the past several years, I would rate T C Dental as one of the best that I have been to. The staff including of course Dr. Squier were professional, caring and made "going to the Dentist" a pleasure rather than an "ordeal" My choice for superb dental care!

Patient Review by LINDA V

Not only was the staff outstanding for their courtesy and friendliness but also they were extremely efficient and worked together as a well-oiled team. It was apparent how they stepped in to help each other with whatever task that needed to be done from administrative tasks to assisting with the equipment and patient needs of Dr. Rachel Squier. Dr. Squier herself is special. She is forthright, caring, and persistent among many other qualities that are on display as well as her knowledge and skill to conceptualize a variety of approaches that may be taken on behalf of her patient. I am very comfortable to be in the care of these people.

Patient Review by Marilyn B

I have many implants from out of state several years ago, done by the best. I chose Dr. Squier, for continued care in 2011, because of where she received her education, and found her to be beyond what I expected. She is competent, but also caring and just nice. Cindy, her hygienist is tops also, as is her staff. Her office is well run and clean. I would not go to anyone else. I feel lucky to be one of her patients. M.B. RN

Patient Review by Frank S

I have a problem with a 20 year old implant that has developed a reoccurring difficulty with the implant screw loosening up in short time intervals and then shearing. Dr Squier analyzed the implant history and proposed both short term and long term options to resolve the problem. She appeared very knowledgeable in implant history which was very important for my "antique" implant and I am confident we will work together to implement a long term solution to my shearing and loosening implant screws.

Major dental procedures can be a little alarming. Whenever I go to Dr. Squier, I am immediately put at ease. I had no discomfort having the dental implants. Her work is perfection!

Patient Review by Hilary D

After a few visits, I can say it is consistently exquisite service. From the start of walking into the lobby, you are warmly welcomed by Shirley. They are very accommodating to scheduling. Communication comes with ease by phone or email. A lot of doctors would shy away from working on my prosthesis, but Dr Squire had no problem working on me. She is very knowledgeable and will take the time to explain everything. If you're lucky, she'll even sing for you. =) This place comes highly recommended.

When I meet with Dr. Strass next week, I will ask to use tritium alloy screws instead of stainless steel for added strength since there isn't any warranty when they break and they are stronger than steel.
